Tottenham finally managed to break the poor run of form against their London rivals Chelsea after beating Jose Mourinho’s team 5-3 at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day.

This was a mightily impressive result for Tottenham given that they were not favourites to get anything against the table leaders despite playing at home.

Chelsea have been poor away from home of late and Spurs managed to take full advantage of it. Mauricio Pochettino came in for criticism during the early part of the season, but the former Southampton boss has shown in recent weeks that he can make this Spurs team challenge for top four spot.

This victory coupled with teams like Manchester United dropping points has seen Tottenham close the gap to the top four to only two points. Spurs have dropped only two points in the last five matches and this impressive run of form has also seen them go ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool in the table. Diego Costa opened the scoring for Chelsea and the worst was feared for Tottenham after 18 minutes, but they managed to pull themselves together and score 5 goals. Eden Hazard was the best man on the field and he was almost single-handedly responsible for Chelsea scoring three goals.

“The most important thing today is to congratulate my players. It was a great day for us. There was a great atmosphere out on the pitch, and for our supporters to. It was a great victory. We deserved the victory and we were better than Chelsea. But for me, it's only three points.I think it’s a good victory against Chelsea, who I think are one of the best teams in the world. But this is nothing – in the end it's only three points,” said Pochettino, who saw his tired players leave to a standing ovation after the match.
